 KAMUT INTERNATIONAL SUPPORTS ORGANIC ORGANIZATIONS

Being an organic farmer is fraught with challenges from unpredictable weather, to equipment difficulties, to fuel costs and transportation issues. Kamut International (KI) relies on almost two hundred organic growers in Montana, Alberta, and Saskatchewan to grow KAMUT® wheat on tens of thousands of acres. KI supports these organic farmers in several ways. The KAMUT® trademark serves to provide a fair and stable market for growers; farmers, who grow the grain, do not have to worry about price fluctuations or how to sell their grain.

KI supports an agronomy specialist, Wes Gibbs with Integrity Ag Services, who helps farmers with questions such as when to seed, how to incorporate the wheat into their organic rotations, and how to set their combines to best harvest the grain.

KI co-hosts, with Montana Flour and Grains and Prairie Heritage Seeds, a growers dinner each winter to update farmers on topics that include news about the overall crop, grain and health research, and market trends in addition to providing an opportunity to network with other organic growers. Among the highlights of the event is recognizing growers for their efforts by awarding farmers who grew KAMUT® wheat with the highest protein, lowest breakage and dockage, highest test weight, and highest yield. The overall winner receives the coveted KAMUT® Cup.

KI also supports organizations that support farmers including the Organic Farming Research Foundation, the Organic Trade Association, The Rodale Institute, Organic Connections (Saskatchewan), and the Montana Organic Association. These organizations support growers with education opportunities, research grant funds, lobbying and organizational support, and networking.

Bob Quinn, the owner and founder of Kamut International, expends a tremendous amount of time and energy supporting organizations and speaking about KAMUT®
Brandkhorasan wheat, organic farming, health research, and alternative energy projects, at conferences such as the recent AERO (Alternative Energy Resources Organization), held in Butte, Montana. Bob frequently hosts students, researchers, professionals, the public, and growers at his farm in Big Sandy to share with them the latest on his growing trials, equipment innovations, and value-added projects. Bob’s work for organic farmers is not just local; he also supports organic farming around the world.

Kamut International/Kamut Enterprises of Europe, bvba, IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements), and the University of Bologna are collaborating to host the First International Conference on Landrace Wheats For Healthy Food Systems in June 2018. KI strives to make organic farming a little easier and more rewarding for growers.
